Pocket Operator goes Modular

As of recently, Teenage Engineering has just announced their new series of Pocket Operators: Pocket Operator Modular. While this isn’t a continuation of the classic POs, it’s a completely new line. Tons of other users have been asking (read: begging) Teenage Engineering to come up with an analog FM synthesizer. And they’ve finally done it. Just looking at it really gives off that classic Pocket Operator vibe. It’s so bare bones that you have to fold the sheet metal yourself. Check the official video below:

If you don’t know what you’re looking at, it’s a modular, analog synthesizer. By patching different modules together, you can build different kinds of sounds. Using different routes and parameters produces even more unique effects and sounds. Clearly, it’s a bit more complicated than the last series of POs, but still aimed at beginners due to the relatively lower price point.

From the official site, they are offering three different kits. And it’s a bit confusing to say the least, since many of the kits have overlapping modules. We’ll dive into the different modules, systems, and kits in a follow up post. But for now, enjoy the images and list of modules spoiled so far. They have stated that individual module sales will start at a later date.

The Breakdown

All of the 15 + 1 modules are listed below. Note that some of these are

13. Mystery Module (number 13) – What’s this?

16. Keyboard (16-note membrane keyboard)

What is module 13? For now, it’s a mystery.

Pocket Operator Modular 400 – The Monster

The 400 kit contains all of the main modules, and is the most complete pack. You will still need the keyboard, or something else to send voltage out. So buy this along with the keyboard to get the whole Pocket Operator Modular experience.

Pocket Operator Modular 170 – The Entry Kit

The 170 kit has 8 modules, including the keyboard. This is the only “complete set,” but you’re limited to a square wave keyboard. It’s a great entry point for people new to synthesizers. This could become really popular after they release individual modules.

Pocket Operator Modular 16 – The Keyboard Module

The 16 kit, or probably better known as Module 16, is just a keyboard. It doesn’t actually produce any sound on itself, just sends out a signal to be used with other modular synthesizers.

Pocket Operator Modular looks really exciting. It’s definitely more involved than the last series but we’re all excited. If it’s too much, consider the older series of POs outlined in our beginner guide.
